The Book of Life
A Miracle on The Day of the Dead: A Dark Fantasy co-produced by Guillermo del Toro
This is the Japanese premier of The Book of Life, a film nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 2015 and awarded a Character Design Award at the 2015 Annie Awards. This colorful dark fantasy, co-produced by Guillermo del Toro (the director of Pacific Rim), tells the story of a bullfighter, Manolo, and his strange adventure of love and dreams. The film charms viewers with appealing characters who reflect contemporary society. It features the voices of Diego Luna (Elysium), Zoë Saldaña (Avatar), and Channing Tatum (Magic Mike).
Although he comes from a family of bullfighters, Manolo has a gentle heart and wants to be a musician rather than a bullfighter. He has two friends from childhood: Joaquin, the son of a brave soldier, and Maria, the daughter of a free and energetic general. Through their intimate relationship, Manolo and Joaquin both fall in love with Maria. During the celebration of the Day of the Dead, La Muerte and Xibalba, two gods from the Land of the Remembered, find them and make a bet on which of the two men will marry Maria. To win the bet, Xibalba gives Joaquin a pin called “The Pin of Everlasting Life” and takes Manolo to the land of the dead, while a band of robbers attacks the town and endangers Maria. While dead, Manolo has an adventure in the Land of the Remembered, before returning to his hometown to save Maria.
